Detailed Findings on Section Addressing Productivity

The Coalition of Private Sector Organizations

I. Background

This report is based on a survey of businesses conducted during the month of June by the Coalition of Private Sector Organizations, an umbrella group of private sector organizations.

This report provides details of business responses with regard to those questions addressing productivity. The objective of the survey with regard to this section was to gain a greater understanding of the degree to which productivity is an issue affecting businesses and the economy.

II. Detailed Findings - Productivity

1. Employee Productivity and Success of Business

Businesses Overwhelmingly Point to Correlation Between Productivity of Employees and Success or Failure of Their Business

  • 98% of Employers Link Success or Failure of Their Business to Employee Productivity

  • 82% Indicate There is a Strong Correlation to Their Businesses Success

More Than Four Out of Five Employers Report That Employee Productivity is a Problem Affecting Their Company

  • 81% cite productivity as a problem affecting their company; 28% term it a significant problem

2. Factors Contributing to Low Productivity

Top Factors List by Employers as Contributing to Low Productivity

  • Poor Work Ethics cited as major factor by 95% of employers
  • Lax Attitude About Time a major factor by 94% of employers
  • Ineffective Management a major factor cited by 84% of employers
  • Time Spent Doing School Run cited by 69% of employers
  • Unions Not Addressing the Problem listed as major factor by 66% of employers
  • Social Problems of Employees listed as major factor by 63% of employers
  • Other Factors cited include: absence of political leadership; poor basic education skills; parental neglect; the need for more training

III. CONCLUSIONS

Based upon a review and analysis of the survey findings in these areas, The Coalition of Private Sector Organizations offers the following conclusion:

  1. The issue of productivity is pervasive throughout the economy and must be addressed seriously by Government, businesses and labour. It is a major issue, not only in the context of the present economic environment, but as it impacts our nation's long term economic and social stability and viability.

  2. Low productivity is a major contributing factor to our inability to quickly improve business performance and stimulate economic recovery.
