The Bahamas Decent Work Country Programme

Representatives of the TRIFOR Committee along with the Hon. Dion A. Foulkes, Minister of Maritime Affairs & Labour and Dr. Ana Teresa Romero, Director of the ILO Subregional Office for the Caribbean, signed The Bahamas Decent Work Country Programme as our common strategy to provide decent and productive work. The three major priorities of the programme are Institutional Strengthening; Social Dialog; and Labour Legislation and respect for Rights at Work.

The employer and employee recommended amendments to the Employment Act presented at the TRIFOR Conference in October 2007 were forwarded to the ILO for technical review. At the signing of The Bahamas Decent Country Work Programme Dr. Romero presented the TRIFOR Committee with the review and stressed that the document contains suggestions only. The recommendations put forward are for consideration but the final decisions are ours.

Harmonization of Labour Legislation Project

*   Workshop on Labour Legislation - Report    15th - 16th May, 2008
The ILO sponsored a Caribbean Subregional Tripartite Workshop on Labour Legislation in Trinidad and Tobago on the 15th & 16th of May, 2008 as part of their Harmonization of Labour Legislation project. This report was prepared by BECon Director Mr. Winston Rolle who attended this workshop.
*   Bahamas Compliance with CARICOM Model Labour Legislation    May 2007    (PDF Format)
Clive Pegus, Attorney-At-Law, produced a Review and Analysis of Compliance of the National Labour Legislation of The Bahamas with CARICOM Model Labour Legislation. The review is a detailed audit of compliance in four key areas.

Forums, Seminars and Workshops

*   11th Round Table for Caribbean Employers' Organizations    15th - 17th April, 2008
While the ILO is tripartite in nature, it has a desk for each of the Social Partners. Every three years a Round Table for Caribbean Employers' Organizations is held for employers only. This report was prepared by BECon Director Mr. Gordon Rodland who attended this forum.
