Update On Labour Bills
Government agreed to delay introducing the Minimum Wages Bill & the Health And Safety At Work Bill, and to delay passage of the Employment Bill. These decisions were made in wake of the slowdown in our economy as a result of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington D.C. on September 11th. The shutdown of air travel to and from the U.S. for a couple of days combined with the reduced number of visitors after air travel resumed has dealt a devastating blow to tourism, our number one industry. It is expected that most Bahamian businesses will feel the domino effect of this slowdown.
No time frame was given as to how long the delay will be in effect, however Government stated that notice would be given of the date Government plans to proceed with the Bills. In the meantime meetings of the Coalition of Private Sector Organizations technical committee will be held in order to arrive at an employer position in regards to the Minimum Wages & Health And Safety At Work Bills.
