Ministry Solicits BECon's Recommendations
By letter dated 29th May the Ministry of Labour and Immigration has requested that BECon provides employer recommendations for Government's review of the labour legislation. The text of the letter is shown below:
29th May 2002
Mr. Brian Nutt
President
Bahamas Employers Confederation
Nassau, Bahamas
Dear Mr. Nutt:
You would recall that in the recent Speech From The Throne delivered by Her Excellency, The Governor General, The Government committed to revisiting the recently passed Labour Legislation, "in order to address the just concerns of employers and employees alike." In this connection, it was envisaged that "dialogue will soon be initiated with representatives of organized labour and employers with a view to receiving their specific recommendations."
In view of the foregoing, I have been asked my Minister, the Hon. Vincent A. Peet, to solicit your recommendations for review of the Labour Legislation.
It would be appreciated if your response could be received on or before June 17, 2002.
Yours faithfully,
Thelma A. Beneby (Mrs.)
Permanent Secretary
June 17th in just over two weeks away, so the time frame for responding is very short. In light of this we urgently request that you send whatever concerns you have on the labour legislation to BECon by fax or email. If you would like to voice your concerns but remain anonymous, you can send your comments via the Labour Law Concerns page of our web site. Providing your name and email address is optional on this page.
Stay Updated on the Labour Law Review
In order to provide as wide a base of employer representation as possible, BECon is inviting employer and business organizations to join us as the Coalition of Private Sector Organizations. This Coalition will represent employers during the review process of the labour legislations.
In order to keep up to date on the progress (or lack thereof) during the review, please subscribe to the Members Only area of BECon's web site, one of the new Internet services being offered to members that was announced in our last News Bulletin. Information will be posted here that will not be available anywhere else.
Every member with Internet access is strongly urged to subscribe to at least two of the Internet services being provided, 1) the password protected Members Only area where information that should not be released to the general public will be posted, and 2) the Group Email that will be used to notify members when updates are made to the web site, and to share your news and comments with your fellow members or to ask questions.
Web Site Facelift
Each page of the Bahamas Employers Confederation web site has been changed from the format of HTML (HyperText Markup Language) to the format of SHTML (Server-Side-Include HyperText Markup Language). Server Side Include adds more functionality to the web page and makes it easier to update multiple web pages at the same time. For example, each News Bulletin on the website has BECon's contact information, i.e. telephone number, fax number and email address. In HTML any changes made to this information has to be changed on each page. Using SHTML a small file was created with just the contact information that is read into each News Bulletin page. If the phone numbers change, altering the one small file will change the numbers on each News Bulletin page.
Because of the change in format, if you have bookmarked a particular page on the web site you will get a "Not Found" message when you try to access the link. Please delete all bookmarks of this type and go to the root directory in order to add the links back to your Favorites. Sorry for this inconvenience.
Visit the Web Site and Participate in BECon
As a membership organization, BECon is only as strong as the participation of its members. Please keep updated on BECon and be involved by visiting the public web site, subscribing to its Internet services, giving us feedback, and volunteering your time to assist BECon by serving on one of its subcommittees. Only your support and participation can place BECon on the track of continued growth and expansion.
